We decided to try something different this weekend and visited Sofrita in Fountain Hills, which is a Latin American eatery with tapas, sangria, and lovely outdoor seating. The atmosphere is very festive and colorful, full of folk art, and upbeat music. There was live music going on with an incredible guitarist and singer playing Spanish tunes. They even have Flamenco shows from time to time. Sangria and tapas are their specialties; tapas are shareable, small plates that are a staple of Spanish cuisine. Sofrita offers breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner and provides lots of selection including bruschettas, mixed Caribbean plates, and other Spanish-Latin flavors.
We went for their happy hour and were not disappointed. I partook in the mini margarita (with salt, of course!) and my partner went with the Red Desert Flower Tea, one of their non-alcoholic options; this was a Jamaican floral tea with seasonal fruits and was refreshing. Sharing some happy hour food, we selected the Tostones, fried plantains with Sriracha Mayo dipping sauce which was just the right amount of spicy. We also chose the Mexican Street Corn – a char-grilled treat with Queso Blanco and Spicy Sofrita Mayo – and it was delicious! You can add chicken or salmon to this dish to make it more of a meal. We finished off by sharing a plate of Garbanzos Fritos which are fried chickpeas covered in savory and spicy Moroccan spices – these were definitely my favorite!
